IVR Systems
What are they?
Web sites and IVR systems are analogous. They serve the
same basic need; to provide information about a topic to a user at their
convenience using a well established data to human interface standard. The web
uses the computer and the IVR uses the telephone. The limits of IVR systems
become clear when you compare the number of keys, screen size, and bandwidth
between IVR Systems and the Web accessed via computer. The limits of the web
become clear when you try to surf the web without a web connected computer.
These lines blur when presented with a smartphone.
How are they made?
IVR Systems
are computers, usually server class, that are connected to the intra-net of a
company and internal or external telecommunications cloud so that users have
access via the telephone and the IVR System has access to data sources on the
intra-net like SQL Server, Oracle or stored fax documents. This also serves as a
nicely secured firewalled access point to database information. These systems
can also be enable within routing devices like Cisco network processors and
Avaya phone systems. These systems may or may not be PC based technologies. For
PC based technologies there are numerous vendors supporting Windows and Linux as
IVR System PC Operating Systems.
Where do I get one?
You can purchase an IVR
system as pure software, a development toolkit, or a package that is previously
written to integrate into an existing data software package. For instance a
health care company may buy an IVR System add on from their existing accounting
software company to provide information to staff about payroll deduction
options.
